TVUUC Shooting

July 28, 2008 at 1:44 pm

I’m a bit wigged out just now. My then-wife and I visited TVUUC back when we moved to Knoxville for me to attend graduate school. This is the closest I’ve come to such violence in my life and my thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the deceased, the members of TVUUC, and the Knoxville community. It’s a sobering thought to consider that had I found a job in Knoxville after quitting grad school, I might have been sitting in that sanctuary yesterday morning.

It’s been 2 1/2 years. I was there that day. About a year later I was driving, windows open, on Kingston Pike, the main east/west road in town, when a woman in a huge pick-up started screaming at me that “you people ought to be put down like dogs…” It took a moment for me to understand she was loosing control over my Obama Biden bumper sticker. Now I really do feel like the conservatives are genuinely evil. I’ve watched murder – been threatened myself – by people who claim the moral high ground for their hatred. I’ve also resigned from TVUUC because I can’t sit still in the sanctuary anymore. The terrorist won – and he claimed to be a Christian American Patriot.
