Joel,

I don't hear the level of personally directed vitriol in the Democratic campaign that I hear in the Republican campaign. Obama and Biden assert that McCain and Palin aren't right for the country, but they haven't tried to accuse their opponents of being terrorists or un-American. Nor have they tried to continue/enhance the us-vs-them divide the GOP has relied upon since the Reagan years.

I used to admire John McCain, and publicly stated that I would consider voting for him if he got the Republican nomination and the Democrats didn't front anyone I could stand.

Since then, the Democrats have gained a candidate I back 100% and it feels like John McCain has been replaced by a Neo-Con pod-person. I've lost a lot of respect for him since the beginning of the general election campaign and his taking up of many of the same tactics that were used to torpedo his primary race in 2000.

Then is Senator Obama's rhetoric the proximate cause of Republican HQ's in at least seven cities being vandalized, a McCain supporter's house with a huge yard sign being firebombed, a McCain worker- a middle aged lady- being beaten in NY, and rampant and obscene heckling of McCain people ? All these can be Googled for, or I can send you links if you prefer. Neither candidate has said anything that could be the proximate cause of violence, and neither party has a corner on the good or the bad. These things have gone on every election since before we broke away from England.
