To Pres. George H.W. Bush. and all you NeoCon, kleptocratic, law-breaking, theocratic, Dominionist thugs.  Good riddance.  Don’t let the door hit you on the ass on your way out the door!  I hope I never see you all again on Capital Hill.

To Elizabeth Dole.  Goodbye!  You can take your nasty-ass ads back home to Salisbury, NC, where you started out.  Adios.

To Sen. McCain.  I’m glad you didn’t get elected.  I used to like you, a lot, but the John McCain I respected was replaced by a right-wing pod person about the time you won the Republican nomination.  I hope you go off and find your old self again.  The self-serving pandering to the right-most slice of the Republican party was beneath you, really.

To Gov. Sarah Palin.  If I never hear your name on the news again, I’ll be happy.  I think Dan Quayle was better prepared to be Vice President than you are.  ’nuff said.

To President-Elect Obama.  I’m going to hold you to your promises.  You better work as hard as you can to make them happen.  I trust that you will and I’m very happy we elected you.

Goodbye Opus.  It’s been real.

Russ Daggat has a post up today descibing Barack Obama’s time as President of the Harvard Law Review.  The Harvard Law school at that time was strongly polarized along political lines and when Obama was made President of the Law Review, many left-wingers thought they had finally gotten their turn; expecting him to use the modest powers of the President to further their causes, appoint minorities to positions on the Review, etc.  Instead, Obama refrained from such activities.  Bradford Berenson (Harvard Law, class of ‘91; associate White House counsel, 2001-2003) said of Obama:

He was unwilling to undermine, based on the way I viewed it, meritocratic outcomes or democratic outcomes in order to advance a racial agenda. That earned him a lot of recrimination and criticism from some on the left, particularly some of the minority editors of the Review. …

This gibes with everything I’ve seen of Obama so far and I am hopeful that President Obama will work to restore one of the foundations of our country:  the professional cadres of career government workers and mliitary officers that the Bush administration has done so much damage to over the past eight years.

I hope you’re happy John McCain.  The tactics you’ve let your campaign advisor use are the proximate cause for all of this.

I think Barack Obama should make Colin Powell his Secretary of Defense.  Who better to place over the abused and war-worn military of the United States.  Who better to shepherd it back into the fine tradition of the American military and restore its honor and morale.  Powell would defend his men and women against ill-use and champion their cause with President Obama and the Congress.  And what a blow it would lay to the charges that Obama doesn’t know how to cross the aisle for bi-partisan action.

Choosing Colin Powell for his Secretary of Defense would be a courageous, right, action by President Obama.
